BEDTIME / TONIGHT'S STORY
The Gray Prince and the Water of Life

Once upon a time, there was an ancient kingdom. The king had three sons. The eldest prince dressed as brightly as gold, so people called him the Golden Prince. The second prince wore silver-white clothes and behaved with great dignity, so people called him the Silver Prince. The youngest prince spent most of his time in fields and forests, watching insects and collecting stones. His clothes were often covered in dirt and grass, so people called him the Gray Prince.
The Gray Prince was not spoiled. He loved flowers, insects, streams, and quiet moments alone in nature. But people in the palace often laughed at him, saying he looked more like a playful shepherd boy than a prince.
One day, the king became seriously ill. He called his three sons to his bedside and said, “I am old, and I must choose a new king. Whoever finds the legendary Water of Life will inherit the throne.”
The three princes set out at once.

The Golden Prince rode a white horse and wore magnificent golden clothes, walking proudly at the front. The Silver Prince brought many servants and a luxurious sedan chair, making a grand noise along the way. Only the Gray Prince dressed simply, carried a butterfly net around his neck, and kept insect specimens and strange stones in his pockets.
“Gray Prince, what are you doing?” the Golden Prince teased him. “Are you going to look for bugs?”
The Gray Prince did not get angry. He simply said, “I am going to find the Water of Life. Perhaps bugs and stones can tell me where it is.”
His two brothers laughed loudly.
They traveled for a long time and finally reached a high mountain. The Golden Prince and the Silver Prince wanted to take the fastest and most impressive road, but they often got lost. Their food ran low, and their servants became too tired to continue. The Gray Prince walked behind them, not quickly, but always observing the ants, butterflies, streams, and plants along the way.
One day, the Golden Prince and the Silver Prince were hungry and tired, sitting on a rock and sighing. Suddenly, the Gray Prince ran toward them excitedly. “Brothers, I have found the Water of Life!”

He led his brothers deep into the valley. There was a clear pool of water, and the surface glowed with a soft light. A deer drank from it and stood up stronger; birds drank from it and sang more brightly; even a wounded fox slowly regained its energy.
The Golden Prince and the Silver Prince were stunned.
“How did you know water was here?” the Silver Prince asked in surprise.
The Gray Prince said, “I saw animals coming this way, and I noticed that the grass beside the stream grew especially well. True Water of Life must be hidden where there is life.”
The three princes quickly filled their water skins and returned to the palace.
After drinking the Water of Life, the king gradually recovered. He looked happily at the Gray Prince and said, “This time, the one who truly found the Water of Life is the Gray Prince.”
The Golden Prince and the Silver Prince bowed their heads with red faces.
The king continued, “A splendid appearance does not always bring wisdom. The Gray Prince did not care about show like you did, but he used his own eyes to observe nature and his own heart to find the answer. That is the skill a king needs most.”
From then on, no one laughed at the Gray Prince anymore. He became the new king and ruled the country with kindness and wisdom. His two brothers also learned to respect him.
This story tells us:
A person’s value does not depend on how splendidly they dress, but on whether they are willing to observe carefully, learn diligently, and cherish their own special gifts.
